A wonderful example of traditional design with modern living
When the homeowners purchased this beautiful Georgian house they knew it needed some love and attention to turn the house into the family home they had always dreamed of. The house needed sympathetic restoration to compliment the period interior architecture, while the homeowners needed timeless cabinetry to compliment family life, reflect their personal style and enhance the original features of their home.
Thomas May was tasked to create timeless storage solutions for the family’s study, formal living room and master bedroom. Both the study and the formal living room boasted bay windows, grand ceiling heights and beautiful arched alcoves, which immediately stood out as the perfect location to house the homeowner’s collection of books and antique maps.
We kept the design simple, perfect for purpose and timeless; open shelves are a great way to display treasured possessions, while the closed base cabinets allow the homeowners to tidy away any toys or paperwork. Building the bespoke book shelves into the alcoves allowed us to create stylish storage solution without the need to invade on the living space of the rooms.
We wanted the design to be completely seamless, as if it was always supposed to be there, and this was achieved through careful planning and seeking inspiration from the original joinery features of the house. The cabinets in the study were painted using Little Greene Slaked Lime to match the existing woodwork in the room, while the cabinets in the formal living area were painted in Little Greene Canton to tie in seamlessly with the bold colour scheme of the room.
Building bespoke cabinets and bookshelves into alcoves is a great way to maximise on storage without losing valuable floor space. Combining open shelves with closed cabinets allows you to display your favourite books and possessions while hiding away media systems, games and anything else you’d rather keep behind closed doors.
Onto to the master bedroom, we handcrafted a bespoke fitted wardrobe to add a touch of luxury to the homeowner’s bedroom. Combining timeless design with innovative technology allowed us to create a functional piece of elegant furniture that caters effortlessly to the homeowner’s needs.
With motion-sense cabinet lighting, full-height hanging space, adjustable shelving and oak dovetailed drawers the wardrobe was designed to make life a little easier for the homeowners, we carefully considered how they lived their lives and what they needed from their wardrobe. This allowed us to create a piece of furniture that exceeded their expectations on function, design and craftsmanship.
If you want a golden rule that will fit everything, this is it: have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.
